The UUCP Zone

• As one of the first ICANN-style Internet Domain Registrars, the UUCP Zone registered .COM and .EDU domains for UUCP-only organizations, and assisted with ARPANET gatewaying.

• The first UUCP domain created in 1986 was Horton’s employer: att.com.  The second was stargate.com, for Stargate Information Services.

• Tim Thompson led the UUCP Zone registration.

• The UUCP Zone registered UUCP-based Internet domains for $150, generating an outcry that was not repeated until the INTERNIC began charging for domains. Everyone expected the net to be free.
